A day in the life of Joseph

AN ORDINARY DAY WITH NEW CLOTHES
Does it fit? Do you like it?, said Jacob to Joseph. I do like it very much father; the robe fits perfectly but why all the colors?, Joseph asked. With a look of pride Jacob replies, I chose those colors because it reminds me of God’s everlasting covenant between himself and man to never destroy the earth with a flood again. Now the reason for the gift is because you are the son of the love of my life and of my old age.
I’m so proud of you! I wish your mother was here to see how handsome you’ve become. Did I tell you I went to visit her grave today? Oh how I miss her so. With a sigh Joseph answered, Father, I also miss mother too and wish she was here. I must say though I think she would have changed your mind about the colors you chose for my robe.
Both Jacob and Joseph laughed for several minutes when unexpectedly the door opens and 10 men entered the house. They stood silent as they looked at their little brother wearing this ridiculous robe of many colors; wondering if they should they laugh or be jealous of the fact that they never received such a gift from their father; so they chose the latter and decided to mock the robe and hate their teenager bother instead. Some walked away giggling while the rest just shook their heads in wonder. The next day Joseph began to share, innocently I might add, about a dream he had but it only serve as cause for the brothers to hate Joseph all the more.
THOUGHT TO PONDER
Can I pause here for a second and say that your hopes and dreams will not always be received well by others and it won’t be your fault, it will be theirs! Keep pressing toward your dreams despite’s the naysayers and critics. Believe the Lord’s purpose for you even when your ordinary day turns terrible. His voice is really all that matters.
JEALOUSY ARISES
Now back to the scene. Guess what happens next? Joseph has yet another dream, this time even his father rebukes him. By now his brother’s have had all they could take from the dreamer and devise a plan to get rid of him. The first plan was to kill him and dump him like trash into a pit. But Ruben pleaded to them not kill but instead leave him in a pit ( which Reuben had intended to rescue Joseph later).
The brothers agreed not to shed his blood so they began their 2nd attempt to rid themselves of Joseph by tearing off his robe and throwing him into the pit with no water. A third plan became available when they spotted some Midianites traders up the road and sold Joseph into slavery. Hmm interesting, I say it was really traders selling to traders.
This calls for another pause. The enemy of your purpose will always try to get rid of you in what ever means possible. When he sees potential in you he is threaten and so he will try to take you out. Why? Because he is a dreamer killer. But remember God is a dreamer creator. His design for your life will not end as a blue print on a draft table. The divine architect will complete the construction of your dream until completion.
Back to the story. What a day for Joseph! He was only 17 and has experienced more trauma and pain in the early years of his life then most do in a lifetime. What an awful resume of life for such a youngster to have. He was hated, rejected, taken away from his father, discarded like trash, and sold into slavery all before the age of 18. To make matters worst, and they will, he was all alone, traveling with strangers, and heading to God knows where; BUT GOD KNEW WHERE!
THE DEATH OF A DREAM or IS IT?
How would all the dreams he had ever come true now? Or where they true at all? If they were true then how come all these terrible things were not revealed to him in any of his dreams? Why take Joseph so high in expectation to then only bring him to a low degradation? Where was God when this happen? Let me tell you where God was. God was in the pit with Joseph and with him as they sold him to traders.
God was with Joseph through it all and will remain with him throughout what has yet to occurred. The rest of the story unfolds with a domino effect of awful things happening to Joseph, time after time and enough to break the human spirit. Yet God’s plan for Joseph was as alive and stronger than ever. We may break under the pressure of life but God’s plans for us will never buckle! God never put up a white flag of surrender in our purpose because he never gives up.
I sincerely pray that we cling to the Holy Spirit and ask for his strength of endurance in our toughest moments; even when we don’t see what’s up ahead. It’s important for use to understand that the Lord doesn’t always give us all the details in our journey. The bigger picture is meant to elude us so that God could see and test our reaction to His silence. Will we still trust in Him and remain faithful when all hell breaks loose?
I know what you’re thinking? But when is enough, enough? I can’t take it anymore! When will my freedom come? My dear friend, no one knows God’s timeline for ending trials but I will say these two things and I will use them to conclude this devotional thought for today, as condensing this message has not come easy for me. I will leave you with this. First, when in the lowest point of your life it is vital that you look up and worship the Most High. Freedom comes in different ways but most importantly it begins from within, then in God’s time, physical freedom will follow.
Lastly, I will end this point with question to you. Do you know what started Joseph on the road to his freedom? I discovered that It all began when he used his gift.
When Joseph was accused of rape and sent to prison the Bible records that there was a baker and a cup barer in the prison who had dreams that needed interpretation. Joseph over heard them and offered to assist with the meaning. We know the story right? Joseph’s correctly deciphered its meaning. Soon after one of them gets axed and the other gets promoted. Eventually the promise kept by the baker provides Joseph with the opportunity to use his gift again to help the king with his dream.
Here begins the exit for Joseph, as God grants him favor and positions him right before the king. A divine moment if ever there was. Joseph then precisely interprets the kings dream and is rewarded with favor, freedom, and leadership. He is made second in command in all of Egypt so he could save nations from starvation. Wow! From prison to the place. Now God’s big picture no longer eluded Joseph and his destiny is finally revealed. All that Joseph went through has lead to this moment.
Joseph could have been bitter and angry because of what his brothers did to him. He had good reason to give up, neglect his gifts, and accept his new life as a prisoner. Instead Joseph saw a open window of opportunity and positioned himself to use his gift despite his circumstances. He took action in brokenness places of his life and trusted God for the rest.
Please hear me today! If you don’t grasp anything I’ve written thus far please read this. USE YOUR GIFT WHERE EVER YOU ARE! DESPITE YOUR HARDSHIP. MAKE YOURSELF AVAILABLE IN THE PLATFORM YOU ARE STANDING ON. When you do, a door to your liberty will spring open for you. This liberty is beyond the normal physical experience of being released from a cell. It’s a liberty that transcends from a external location and into the inner part of who God called you to be; to live out your destiny and releasing your God given gifts to a world in need. This is true freedom!
Don’t neglect your gift or you will remain a prisoner in cell of unfulfilled dreams. Set yourself free by releasing your talents to help others now while there is still time. Do what is asked of you, be ready, and watchful for opportunities to position yourself. A divine interruption awaits you.
