AN ORDINARY DAY MEETS A DIVINE INTERRUPTION – Part 8

A day in the life of young Mary

An Ordinary Day Of A Teenager

A soft evening wind approaches a humble home of a family in a small town thousands of miles away. The creaky back porch door opens and a voice calls out. “It’s time to come in, dinner is almost ready. Can you help me set the table?”

“I’ll be right in mother. I was just checking to make sure the animals were in their stalls, replied young Mary.”

As she closed the gate and walked towards the house, Mary looked up at the sky and noticed how much more brighter the stars were than any other night in recent memory. In that instance, she whispers to God. “Thank you my Lord for such a beautiful night, your works are truly glorious”.

“Mary are you coming inside?”, asked her mother.

“Yes mother, I’m on my way”. Can you remind father to take a look at the latch on the gate? The goats tried to escape again and I think it’s because it’s a little loose.”

“Yes, Mary I will remind him after dinner; along with my request to install a new bucket for the well, as it seems the old one has broken off somehow, answered Mary’s Mother.

As the evening progress and everyone’s eyes were heavy from the long day, Mary approached her room to turn in, when she noticed a glimmer.

“Why is my room so bright? “What could be causing the illumination?”, she thought to herself.” Oh Lord, is there a fire in the house?” Please tell me what to do! “Should I wake up my parents?” Very quietly and despite her apprehension, she made her way through the corridor. As she turned her head slightly to peek into her room, there was a tall man standing by her window staring right at her.

He was dressed in a white and gold embroidered garment that extended mid calf and on his feet were what look like gladiator sandals laced up to his shin. On the right side of his hip he carried a long sword with a golden handle, which was partly engraved with symbols, writings of some kind, and the rest covered with beautiful stones.

His hair had a light shimmer, his body had a soft alluring glow, and he had a stance of authority, yet welcoming. Mary suddenly felt safe and decides to approach closer to the stranger. When she did the man began to speak softly but with an intensity and then uttered a message to the young girl.

What a suspenseful scene but like a bad commercial break I will stop the story right there. I think you know what happens next. The angel basically tells young Mary that although she is a virgin she will be chosen for a divine conception.

My sudden interruption of this historic backdrop is to focus on several devotional points that will serve as encouragement for us to live a more committed life to our Lord. These points I will introduce, and because of my love for a good title, I have called it:

Lessons From A Teenager:

What can the older generation learn from those that are younger and less experienced in life? I believe is, plenty!

No matter what your name is, your age, or where you live, God has a purpose for your life. Now, if He hasn’t reveal it already, rest assure that soon there will be a divine interruption that will bring you face to face with your destiny.

When that time arrives, how do we deal with such a sudden change of events in our lives?

Here is what I’ve learned from Mary’s story.

• Mary was a teenager who accepted her calling early in her life, even when she didn’t understand all of the dynamics at play.

• Mary was faithful through the silence years of God. There was a period of 400 years of silence from Lord. No prophetic words were spoken from the book of Malachi to Matthew. Can you imagine how many people must have stop believing in the promises of God throughout that time! Yet, when the Angel spoke to Mary she still had a believing heart towards the things of God.

• Mary knew the voice of her God; she knew that the angelic visitor represented the Most High. This knowledge set the stage for something divine to happen in her life

• Mary had no doubt that God could use her despite her inexperience and cultural pressures she faced.

• Mary embraced her mission despite how sudden and unexpected it arrived. We will never be ready when God shows up but we can prepare our hearts with a readiness to do His will when asked.

• Mary was steadfast during the mission and she did not lose heart midpoint; instead she carried and continued with her calling despite the attacks and opposition. Now of course, she had the help of a great man named Joesph who married and support her throughout this quite unusual purpose.

There is something to be learned from his commitment. In life, it is a vital importance to have the right people with you in your journey. People who will help you along the difficult times; especially when others don’t believe in your so called destiny. I say so called destiny because that’s what the haters would say. We need a friend or companion who will assist us in fulfilling God purpose. Therefore, surround yourself with those who are purpose driven and not aimless. Another lesson to learn from this teenager is:

• Mary completed the mission through her faith in God. Many people start the race to their purpose but not many people actually finish. That’s partly to do with losing their faith at some point. They lose heart and become exhausted of believing in the destiny set before them and they stop running. Mary believed the prophetic word over her and she ran with it to the end. She broke through the finish line like no other woman in history. Mary endured and conquered through the negative voices, the lies, the pain and gave birth to her calling ( our Savior Jesus Christ), nurtured it, and released it back to our father in heaven without even a flinch.

And finally,

• Mary left a legacy for others to be encouraged. As a teenager, she championed through her life so that the greatest purpose could be realized for all generations; that purpose is not our but God’s. Remember, we are not here for ourselves, we are here to live out His mission. Mary’s journey also teaches us that when we say yes to God’s calling all things become possible.

Today I pray that we would all embrace this story and learn from this teenager’s life experience and live a life even more dedicated to God’s will. I pray that Jesus will continue interrupting our lives with His divine presence so that we could live a life to the fullest in Him.

  1. Hey Steve,
Your words of wisdom remind me of how the things my children say are sometimes words I need to hear, and I can learn from as a parent and as an adult. It seems like sometimes the Holy Spirit convicts us through those young voices. And the passion of the youth as in Mary, can remind us of what is truly important. Love you brother and miss you. Ben
