A day in the life of Abraham

IT’S TIME TO GO
Today’s devotional comes from a conversation I had with a friend regarding various transitions and my attempts to encourage him, as he was unsure of the coming changes to his life. I hope that you find this devotional useful to you during your transitional moments.
To borrow a Shakespearian expression and slightly alter it to accommodate this topic I say. “To move, or not to move, that is the question.” As you ponder over this question, it is vital to understand that how you respond to being transitional or not can have a profound outcome on your future. In life, transitions are important but if we hold on to things too long we risk our progression towards a new beginning. Sometimes we want to hold on to the very thing that God is trying to take away. He never takes something from you without replacing it with something new, different, and better.
SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO?
In like manner, the Lord will not allow you to transition from one location to another, whether to live or a career change, without already setting up a place for you elsewhere. Transitions can be good for us but the best and most beneficial ones are those that are directed by the Lord.
Abraham was living in a place called UR which honesty did not fit with what the Lord designed for his future. So God calls him out of that land without giving him all the particulars for purpose. We find this beautiful, sudden call of God to Abraham in Genesis 12v1.
Before we look at the passage let me just point out that when God called him, at that time, his name was actually Abram, which meant father. The Lord changes his name to Abraham years later as a result of his obedience in exiting the land of UR. His new name of Abraham was given because the Lord had far greater plans for him and will often times change a name to fit the description of an individual’s destiny.
The cords of Abraham’s tent was about to be lengthen and his tent enlarged. We see this remarkable transformation take shape in his life because of his submission to the Lord’s will. It’s a no questioned asked approach to following the heart of God. Obedience is the womb that gives birth to your purpose and with it comes a river of blessings.
Now let’s read the biblical passage in Gen 12v1 that provides a general summary of those blessings. Now again, this call from God came suddenly. It’s what I like to refer to as, A Divine Interruption.
”The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.”
InstinctivelyAbraham packed his bags, took his wife, his nephew, and some others with him and began to traverse not knowing where he was going; basically to the unknown (Hebrews 11v8). Before Moses made his exodus Abram started his. God later conveyed to him that the destination would be the land of Canaan; but still an unfamiliar place. Let me pause here for a moment and say that just because a place is unknown or unfamiliar to you, doesn’t mean that the existence of purpose can’t be discovered there. The unknown is just that, UNKNOWN. Why did Abraham have such a leap of faith you may ask?
Well, it’s primarily because he understood the character of God; it’s all about relationship. He didn’t need to have all the blanks filled out for him because his trust in God was firm. His ability to be transient made way for greater blessings in God. There was no apprehension in Abraham; just total obedience; even into the unknown.
WALK WITHOUT FEAR
I believe in order to discover the mystery of the unknown, one must walk towards it without fear. If God has called you into a place that you have never been to before, maybe even strange to you, it’s because He has already gone ahead to prepare it for your arrival and filled it with opportunities for your success.
The only prerequisite for your entry into the newly prepared destination, is to leave the place of UR in your life behind you. Maybe the UR is not an actual location or maybe it is. Only you can determine that. Can it be that the UR in your life is emotional or physically pain. Perhaps even financial due to a loss of employment or business. Whatever you define your UR to be I say, leave it behind and allow the Lord to transition you into a new area of blessings like He did Abraham. Don’t carry the weight of the past if you are seeking a lighter future.
Never stay in a place where you are not growing or doesn’t encourage you in your gifts. Instead, move toward a place that stimulates growth and when you start to feel uncomfortable where you are, that’s the right time for you to go. If you don’t move ahead you can’t grow into the space that God has for you. Don’t let anything come between you and your God ordained territory! If the Lord stretched Jabez’s tent and expanded his borders; you better believe that those blessings ring true for you as well.
Today, I ask you to trust in God and know that He has your best interest in mind. He turns your past into your present, strange new places into sanctuaries, and uncertain journeys into divine transitions. Get your bags ready and begin to march towards your Canaan. Don’t worry about what is unfamiliar throughout the journey because your familiar God is with you; leading you into your promise.
It’s time to LET GO and MOVE forward.
Thanks for visiting.
